About Koala Learning Resources
Where Playtime Meets Learning
At Koala Learning Resources, we believe that the resources children interact with can play an important role in shaping their learning, development, engagement and wellbeing.
We are an Australian educational resources company committed to providing quality, affordable and thoughtfully selected learning resources for early childhood services, kindergartens, schools, educators, professionals and families.
What distinguishes Koala Learning Resources is the professional perspective behind our product selection. We do not simply choose products because they are colourful, popular or entertaining. Our resources are considered through an integrated approach that brings together early childhood education, Positive Behaviour Support, child development and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
This means we consider the whole child.
When selecting a resource, we look beyond what the product is and consider what opportunities it can create for a child. We consider how it may encourage curiosity and exploration, extend learning, promote communication, support sensory experiences, strengthen independence, encourage problem-solving, facilitate social interaction and provide opportunities for children to regulate, participate and engage successfully within their environment.
A Professional Approach to Learning Through Play
Play is one of the most powerful ways children learn.
Through meaningful play experiences, children investigate ideas, experiment, communicate, solve problems, develop relationships, practise emerging skills and build their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
For this reason, our selection process is informed by an early childhood teaching perspective. We seek resources that educators and families can use to create rich, intentional and developmentally appropriate learning experiences rather than simply providing passive entertainment.
We consider opportunities for open-ended play, creativity, early literacy and numeracy, STEM learning, communication, fine and gross motor development, problem-solving, imaginative play, social development and independence.
Where appropriate, resources may also provide opportunities for educators to extend children's learning in ways that connect with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF V2.0).
However, learning is only one part of the picture.
Understanding Behaviour as Part of the Whole Child
Our approach is also informed by the principles of Positive Behaviour Support.
We recognise that behaviour does not occur in isolation. A child's behaviour can be influenced by many factors, including their communication abilities, sensory experiences, environment, relationships, expectations, emotional state, skills and individual needs.
This perspective influences the way we think about educational resources.
We value resources that can help create environments where children have opportunities for choice, communication, predictability, engagement, independence, emotional regulation and successful participation.
Rather than focusing only on responding to challenging behaviour after it occurs, Positive Behaviour Support encourages us to consider what may be contributing to a child's experience and how the environment, interactions and available supports can be adjusted proactively.
A thoughtfully designed learning environment can make an important difference.
For example, sensory and regulation resources may provide children with appropriate opportunities to explore sensory input. Visual and hands-on resources can make concepts more concrete and predictable. Open-ended resources can allow children to participate at different developmental levels, while construction and problem-solving materials can provide opportunities to build persistence, flexibility and confidence.
Our aim is not to label products as solutions to behaviour. Instead, we consider how carefully selected resources can form part of a supportive, engaging and responsive environment.
Designed With Neurodiversity in Mind
At the heart of our philosophy is the understanding that children do not all learn, communicate, regulate or experience their environment in the same way.
Some children may seek movement and sensory experiences. Others may prefer predictable, structured activities. Some children communicate verbally, while others may communicate in different ways. Some children may engage deeply with particular interests, require additional processing time or benefit from different approaches to participation and learning.
These differences are part of the diversity of childhood.
Our resources are therefore selected with consideration for neurodivergent and neurotypical children alike.
We do not believe that inclusion should mean creating one collection for neurodivergent children and another for everyone else. Instead, we aim to select flexible resources that can provide multiple pathways for participation and learning.
The same resource can have a different purpose for different children.
A sensory material may support regulation for one child while encouraging scientific investigation and descriptive language for another. A construction resource may strengthen fine motor skills for one child, support sustained attention and problem-solving for another, and become an opportunity for collaborative play and communication for another.
The value lies in recognising the individual child and understanding how the resource can be adapted, extended and used meaningfully.
Supporting the Whole Child
This integrated philosophy means that when we consider a resource for Koala Learning Resources, we look at its potential to support the child across multiple areas of development.
We consider opportunities for learning and cognition, communication and language, sensory exploration, emotional regulation, social interaction, independence, creativity, physical development, confidence, curiosity and participation.
We also consider whether a resource provides flexibility.
Children develop at different rates and have different strengths, interests and support needs. Resources that allow children to explore in multiple ways can often remain meaningful as children's skills and interests develop.
This is particularly important within inclusive educational environments where children with a wide range of abilities and learning profiles participate alongside one another.
Supporting Educators and Families
We also understand that even an excellent educational resource becomes more valuable when it is used intentionally.
Educators bring professional knowledge of children's development, interests and learning to the resources they provide. Families bring an equally important understanding of their child's personality, strengths, preferences and experiences.
Our role is to help make purposeful resources more accessible to both.
Where appropriate, we aim to provide information about the educational possibilities and developmental opportunities associated with our products so that customers can make informed choices about the resources that best suit their learning environments and children.
We want educators to be able to look at a Koala Learning Resources product and see possibilities: opportunities to extend an emerging interest, introduce a new concept, create a sensory experience, encourage collaboration, support regulation or simply allow children the freedom to investigate and discover.
Purposefully Selected, Not Simply Stocked
Koala Learning Resources is more than a collection of educational products.
Our intention is to build a range where there is professional thought behind what we offer.
Our collection continues to grow across areas such as sensory exploration, emotional regulation, STEM and science, early literacy and numeracy, construction, fine and gross motor development, imaginative and open-ended play, social-emotional learning, communication, nature-based learning, creative arts, First Nations and multicultural learning, and inclusive educational resources.
We seek products that can become part of meaningful learning environments rather than products that serve only a single moment of entertainment.
Our Commitment
At Koala Learning Resources, our philosophy brings together education, development, behaviour, wellbeing and inclusion.
We recognise children as capable individuals with their own strengths, interests, identities, abilities and ways of experiencing the world. Our role is not to expect every child to learn in exactly the same way, but to help provide environments and resources that create different opportunities for children to participate successfully.
Whether a resource is being used by an early childhood teacher planning an intentional learning experience, an educator supporting a child's engagement, a professional considering regulation and participation, or a family creating meaningful learning opportunities at home, we want it to have a purpose beyond the product itself.
Our Mission
Our mission is to provide quality, affordable and professionally selected educational resources through an integrated approach informed by early childhood education, Positive Behaviour Support and neurodiversity-affirming practice.
We are committed to selecting resources that create opportunities for learning, exploration, communication, emotional regulation, independence, creativity, positive engagement and meaningful participation, while recognising and respecting the individual strengths and needs of both neurodivergent and neurotypical children.
Because when children are provided with the right opportunities, supportive environments and meaningful resources, play becomes more than play—it becomes an opportunity to learn, connect, develop and thrive.
